There is a trend in the internet saying that too many emoticons in a conversation can only betrade a lack of trust, lack of imagination and we should get rid of all the emoticons... I totaly disagree with this.

The emoticons have their role, their sense in life and they replace other things that a virtual conversation just can't have. Take a look at the clip below and think about it:

Who invented Emoticons?

Do you remember the first emoticon? Kabonfootprint does. That little string of three characters that when you twist your head on the side it looks like a smiling face. ;-)

It seems that there was an inventor of this "smiley" character set - Professor Scott E Fahlman who first used the characters in an e-mail on September the 19th, 1982, at 11:42 am. He wanted to use these emoticons as "joke markers" but in time, they evolved and today we have the ability to express a wide variety of emotions.

there are some website where you can find archives with hidden or special-designed emoticons. in order to use that emoticons you have to follow the instructions and install the emoticons in the recommended folder.

be aware: only you and the others that have install this set of emoticons are able to see the new smileys. the others that haven't install this set will probably see nothing or the standard yahoo messenger emoticons.

For GMail or Google Mail you don't need a special set of smileys. If you want to attach some interesting smile you just insert the image corresponding to the emoticon into your e-mail and everything is done.

My First Emoticons

I remember the first time I saw the smiles in Yahoo Messenger (Y!M). I was fascinated by the funny design. It's incredible how expressive can be such a small square of pixels... I wonder how much work is in such a small and simple icon. About the talent and imagination of the designer (or designers) I have no doubt.

I also remember the time when first hidden emoticons (or special) were launched. How happy I was when I sent the first special smile that none of my friends knew.

Chatting Programs - Chat Software Clients

The programs that I use for chat and I know are tho following:

Yahoo! Messenger - friendly look, fast file transfer, photo sharing, pretty god voice, excellent for webcam chat, nice avatars and funny smiles images. I think it has a bug because some links are not transmitted. (with or without intention :D )
Skype - very good for voice chat, not very fast file-send but very stable and less errors.
Msn Messenger - old and borring...
Google Messenger - I tried to install it some months ago but I had an error and I gave up. Anyway... there are only few users for Google Messenger
ICQ - I have never used it
mIRC - Shareware IRC Chat client - I haven't used it for 8 years... I think it is for kids
Trillian - chat client for several chatting services: Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, etc... I don't like the interface and the mix of the friend's lists. (you can connect with 3 users simultaneous)
