Who invented Emoticons?

Do you remember the first emoticon? Kabonfootprint does. That little string of three characters that when you twist your head on the side it looks like a smiling face. ;-)

It seems that there was an inventor of this "smiley" character set - Professor Scott E Fahlman who first used the characters in an e-mail on September the 19th, 1982, at 11:42 am. He wanted to use these emoticons as "joke markers" but in time, they evolved and today we have the ability to express a wide variety of emotions.

I've heard that some cigar sellers are negotiating with YM to develop some new avatars and emoticons with some cool smileys, Texan faces like the famous JR, smoking different brands of cigars like Torano or Cuba Aliados. It seems that the discussions are stuck at this moment because of financial reasons but it seems that they will restart them.

Every boy and lots of girls like powerful vehicles, tuned cars and motorcycles. As far as I know there are not "official" avatars or smileys for any of the big messengers... This could be a nice idea.

Emoticons for girls - I think they would have a huge success since almost half of the messengers are used by girls. Fashion Emoticons, Flowers Smiles, Makeup Faces and other girlie stuff could be nice and welcome.

I don't know if it's OK for the childes, but I think some nice smoking faces would be funny to have in the yahoo emoticons list. Some big smile with a Cuban cigar in his mouth must be very funny...

Now the winter holidays are gone and all the rush turns to the next big event: Valentine's Day. The designers already started working on the next Valentine's smileys and they are about to lunch at the beginning of February.

there are some website where you can find archives with hidden or special-designed emoticons. in order to use that emoticons you have to follow the instructions and install the emoticons in the recommended folder.

be aware: only you and the others that have install this set of emoticons are able to see the new smileys. the others that haven't install this set will probably see nothing or the standard yahoo messenger emoticons.

Football Emoticons - Soccer Emoticon

The yahoo messenger set of football emoticons that was available during the World Championship was the funniest set of smileys. I had a lot of fun everytime I was sending that emoticon with the drums that was making a lot of noise!!! Unfortunately I can't manage to find that emoticons again in my Y!M client :(
